2010 September Section Monthly Meeting

  • Date:  Thursday, 23rd September 2010

***This event is open to all business professionals and is sponsored by the American Society of Quality, Section 1313.

The economy, the environment and the geopolitical climate aren't the only sources of the seismic shifts occurring in the world today. At work, we're dealing with a whole new paradigm for getting work done in the 21st century. Years ago, working people complained about being on the hook for their results without having the functional authority to match. Nowadays, accountability for enormous projects with zero management authority is the norm!

How do we manage through influence? What new skills will allow us to grow and deploy our influence on the job? National workplace expert and former Fortune 500 Human Resources exec Liz Ryan will teach participants how to achieve big results without a lofty title or a corner office. You'll learn how to 'spin the table' and sell your ideas and plans internally from the "buyer's" point of view, how to get people across functions and units to band together with you, and how to become an influential thought leader in your place of business. Join us for this lively session that will change your most strongly-held beliefs about your power (or lack of) at work!

Liz Ryan is one of the country's most widely-read and well-respected career and workplace authorities, whose columns for Business Week Online, Yahoo!, Glassdoor.com, Workforce Review, the Huffington Post and other publications reach over 65 million readers per month. ASQ Chapter 1300 Strategic Planning Goal:
Support Nonprofit Organization with Quality Oriented Services

Denver Chapter 1300 of the American Society for Quality is supporting the Colorado Performance Excellence (CPEx) organization in becoming a role model for other organizations in using information technology to support effective process management processes. CPEx strives to recognize and advance the efforts of Colorado organizations dedicated to performance excellence. Formed in 1999 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, CPEx provides its customers with education, assessment, and sharing/networking opportunities focused on the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award criteria, adapted to CPEx.

CPEx's primary services are:

  • Assessment against the CPEx/Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence with feedback and a progressive (i.e., multi-level) award program for applicants
  • Education of organizations to promote understanding and implementation of the performance excellence principles embodied in the CPEx/Baldrige Criteria, and of individuals for assessing applicants against the criteria
  • Sharing and networking to promote transfer and building of performance excellence knowledge assets in the Colorado community
  • To deliver assessment services, CPEx conducts an annual cycle for applicant organizations including assessment (and site visits, if merited), written feedback, improvement feedback to CPEx, and awards (if merited).

CPEx subsists almost entirely on unpaid volunteers and has one paid employee, a part-time Executive Director. Volunteers represent nearly every public and private sector in the state of Colorado, and include front-line and executive-level professionals. With support and coordination from the Executive Director, work is achieved by volunteer committees organized around the Baldrige categories.

Chapter 1300 members David Briggs, Maureen McDevitt, and Eric Sloan are participating as members of CPEx's Process Management Category Team to determine the key aspects of CPEx's process management, including key product, service, and business processes for creating customer and organizational value and key support processes. The Team is working towards achieving the following goals in 2005:

  • Work with Category Teams and process team leaders to identify and map 80% of key CPEx value creation and support processes (~50 processes by the end of 2005);
  • Ensure that all key CPEx value creation and support processes have clearly defined and effectively used process metrics (effectiveness and efficiency).
  • Develop and deploy an effective process management and improvement Methodology for CPEx.
  • Utilize the capabilities of the Nimbus Control-ES software mapping tool effectively.

The results of preliminary process mapping performed by the Process Management Category Team was summarized in the presentation "Process Management by Example: Colorado Performance Excellence (CPEx) for All to See" by David Hooper and David Kilpatrick at the Rocky Mountain Quality Conference on April 19, 2005.

Call for Section Officers and Volunteers

March is the month when Section 1300 traditionally recruits volunteers and section officers for the upcoming section year, June 2007 to May, 2008. Section Officer positions coming open include Section Chair, Chair Elect or Vice Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer. In addition, there are several volunteer positions as Committee Chairs that will come open by the end of this year.

Section 1300 is traditionally strong in the area of member participation, and this is your chance to help our section out in the coming year. Benefits of becoming involved in Section Leadership include the following:

  • Fairly minimal time commitments. Section 1300 holds 10 Monthly Membership meetings and 10 Leadership Committee meetings during a normal section year, and we do not carry on section activities in the summer. This means commitment to attend only 20 meetings during your time in whatever function you should choose.
  • Hanging out with the in-crowd. Leadership committee meetings are traditionally times of fun, good food, and comradeship among Leadership Committee members and volunteers. Our chosen Leadership Committee meeting spot for this year is La Loma Restaurant.
  • A little something for your resume. As we all know, employer requirements are getting ever more stringent, and assuming a leadership role in our society could be just the thing that sets you out for the crowd during your next job search or consideration for promotion.

If you're interested in participating in section leadership, please contact Section Nominating Chair, J.J. Beazeale at j.j.breazeale@asqdenver.org and/ or plan to attend our Section business meeting on March 28th.
