In the 1980's, Six Sigma was developed by the Motorola Corporation in response to excellence in Japanese manufacturing. Six Sigma includes Total Quality Management (TQM) and Statistical Process Control (SPC) as well as other methodologies in a highly objective, and focused system of problem solving. In the following years, Six Sigma was adopted by a wide variety of major companies in the United States, with the result of great success in areas of quality control and resulting cost reduction.
In the early 1990's, the principles of Lean Manufacturing were derived from the Toyota Manufacturing System (TPS). The principles of Lean focus on elimination of waste of all types and increased process speed. In the late 1990's, Allied Signal and Maytag got the idea of cross training employees in both Lean and Six Sigma to combine the benefits of both systems. Thus, Lean Six Sigma was born. In the ensuing years, Lean Six Sigma has found widespread acceptance and great success in the American business community, and of course, there have been many exciting advancements and refinements.

KT and six sigma : Process Mapping Your Brain
James Ladktow
Overview: In a lean culture, every employee is responsible for identifying and correcting problems. Often, the process for doing this, our thinking process, is less defined and structured than it could be. This leads to further inefficiency and lack of focus on what is really important to the business. The Kepner Tregoe Problem Solving and decision Making method is one way to add structure to our thinking process, and help in identifying issues and acting on them appropriately. It is essentially a process map for your brain.
James Ladtkow is a senior development Engineer for CaridianBCT in Lakewood with over 20 years experience in the medical device industry. James has worked in all aspects of medical product development from basic research and clinical validation to manufacturing and facilities construction. James has a Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder and a Masters of Business Administration from Colorado Christian University. In addition to working on medical devices, James has consulted to other industries in the application of Designed Experiments and he has taught plastic processing at Penn State University. James is a Certified program leader for Kepner Tregoe (PSDM) and has taught problem solving and decision making at the University level. James has enjoyed living in Colorado for most of his life and does so now with his wife of 19 years and their three children.
